Some of these species such as mountain lion, black bear, elk, and mule deer have over the counter or easily drawn tags. Other species such as bison, mountain goat, bighorn sheep as well as premium unit deer and elk tags are not so readily available.
These tags are available two ways, The first option is through a draw process where you apply for a tag each year and gain a preference point for each unsuccessful year. Utah is a hybrid state where half the tags go to maximum point holders and the other half goes into a random pool with everyone that applied. The downfall to this option is if you are not already involved in the preference point process you may find yourself waiting 20 plus years to successfully draw some of these tags. Option two is purchasing conservation tags, these tax deductible tags are available at auctions put on by organization's chosen by the state such as SFW, the Mule Deer Foundation, FNAWS, and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation among others. Tags are awarded to the highest bidder and allow you to skip the standard state draw process. Proceeds from these auction tags go towards state approved conservation projects.
